The high heel has been seen as the ultimate feminine fashion accessory but it seems that the ladies shoe of choice could be on the way out.
Vogue magazine reports that this season we should “forget the frivolous, sky scraper heels of trends past – it’s all about the mannish shoe for autumn/winter 2010-11.”
From the Dune shoes and tan cowboy boots seen on the Chloe runway, black leather boots on the Jil Sander catwalk to the glitter embellished brogues at the Marc Jacobs show mannish shoes were everywhere this autumn/winter.
Even the queen of shoes Tamara Mellon has bought into the trend. She has introduced a velvet gentleman’s slipper in Jimmy Choo’s new collection.
But if there is on shoe style to nail the look it has to be the brogue. According to Vogue “even Spanish label Mambrini has created a new women’s collection dedicated to the timeless brogue, proving its popularity.”
While according to Grazia this season we should “Buy into brogues.” The magazine says that the shoes are “still hot for autumn/winter the classic brogue is the perfect partner for everything from soft tailoring to the new cropped trousers.”
And Look magazine reckons that the brogue is the flat of choice this season they say that “the LOOK fashion team have well and truly ditched their ballet pumps for brogues this season.”
But the key question remain what do you wear your new mannish shoes with? Well according to Vogue go for a feminine take on this masculine trend classic; brogues look great worn with socks and a floral dress. But if you want to “go the androgynous route, let your brogues/loafers/lace-ups* (*delete where appropriate – unless of course – you have a pair of each), do the walking beneath a pair of ankle-grazing trousers. You might find it feels even sexier than if you had worn heels.”
So for a quick style update this autumn/winter it seems mannish shoes are the way forward. And if Vogue says they are in style who am I to argue! I’ll definitely be stocking up. The online fashion shop Very.co.uk sells these types of shoes to a reasonable price, and their range of shoes seems never ending. That’s definitely a place to start looking for the fashion of this season!
